Openness is vital to scientific progress in the extreme.

Five desired characteristics of a scientist:

1. PRECISION

Precision relates not only to accurate record keeping but also to the hypothesis derived from the initial theory that is being tested. The language of the hypothesis must be as concise and descriptive of what it seeks to prove as possible. A term used in a hypothesis must include an operational definition for that term in order to be a complete, precise hypothesis.

2. SKEPTICISM

Skepticism, questioning everything, at all times and in all elements of your own findings and research can only ultimately enhance your work.

3. RELIANCE ON EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE

Empirical evidence is the backbone of all legitimate science. Until convincing and repeatable evidence is found a theory remains unfounded, without exception.

4. WILLINGNESS TO MAKE ‘RISKY PREDICTIONS’

Predictions are produced after a cogent hypothesis is derived from the original theory. The more specific and bold a prediction the better it serves the scientist in testing the flaws or strengths of the hypothesis. There are not predictions that are “too risky” only predictions that are too vague as to what is the exact aim of the scientist and the experiment.

5. OPENNESS

Openness is vital to scientific progress in the extreme. A scientist must disclose all evidence, processes, subjects, etc. to the scientific community in order to ensure the hypothesis can be re-tested by a different group of scientists (or students) and also for the fact that each variable in any experiment must be known in order to make any accurate conclusions.
